More than 20 years after Ocado made its name as the first well-known UK supermarket delivery service, there are now dozens to choose from. Most supermarkets deliver and offer collection services for groceries now, including Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer (via Ocado), Asda, Iceland and Morrisons - though not yet Aldi or Lidl.

In fact, plenty of grocery delivery services, from Amazon Fresh to Abel & Cole, don't even have a bricks-and-mortar storefront, so relaxed have we become about ordering our food online. Meanwhile, there are the growing ranks of "instant" delivery services like Getir and Gorillas, whose bikes and scooters are an increasingly familiar sight on city streets.

Ordering is simple and you can create a dietary profile so the site can flag up products that you should avoid. The range is as broad as you'd find in the supermarket itself and same-day delivery is sometimes available, provided you order by 12 noon and the don't need your groceries before 6pm.

The appeal of quick commerce sites like Gorillas is clear: you can have an eco-friendly paper bag of groceries delivered to your doorstep by bike in under 10 minutes (yes, really). You order via an easy-to-use app available on Apple's iOS or Android and it takes less than five minutes to set up.

Gorillas currently serves Cambridge, Nottingham, Reading, Manchester, Southampton and London. There is no minimum order value. Most customers use Gorillas for essentials, drinks and snacks or top-up groceries rather than the big weekly shop. Delivery is usually within 10 minutes and costs a flat rate of 1.80.

Brand new on the scene, Getir launched in the UK in 2021, and delivers in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool, Southampton, Portsmouth, Nottingham, Cambridge, and Leicester. The super fast delivery service promises to delivery groceries to your door in 10 minutes, with a choice of more than 1,500 products. It all operates via the Getir app which can be downloaded on Apple's App Store and Google Play.

Asda, Gorillas and Weezy are the only online grocery sites to offer zero minimum spend for delivery. Others, like Ocado, have minimum spends up to 40. Asda's minimum spend does have a caveat, as orders less than 40 cost an additional 3. With cost of low-priced essentials up by as much as two-thirds this winter, shoppers are looking for cheaper delivery services to balance out the cost of online shopping.

In the case of most supermarkets, it's simply a case of heading to the preferred website and clicking through to book a slot online for your chosen time, choosing your groceries, making sure you've received a confirmation email, and then waiting for delivery. Lots of supermarkets these days are also available via takeaway delivery apps like Deliveroo, Just Eat or Uber Eats. They haven't replaced ordering on supermarket websites, they're just an addition.

In response, some online marketplaces have tried to match producers with surplus perishable produce to new customers in an attempt to replace lost trading relationships. The iTradeNetwork, for example, offered its online platform to companies struggling to sell or buy food during the crisis. But others have sought to change their approach to supplying food altogether. 041b061a72
